Sandeep Unnikrishnan

He had his early education at Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 BHEL Township, Ranipet, Tamil Nadu. Later he studied at Sainik School Kazhakootam in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and joined the National Defence Academy in Pune.

After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army’s 7th Battalion, The Sikh Regiment on 13 December 2000. He took part in various operations like Operation Vijay (1999), Operation Parakram (2001–2002) and Operation Rhino (2003). In 2006, he was seconded to the Special Forces and served with the 21st Special Forces battalion of the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces).

During the Mumbai attacks on 26 November 2008, Major Unnikrishnan was commanding ‘B’ company of NSG’s 51 SFS unit which was flown from Delhi to Mumbai by an IL-76 plane. He led his men from the front during the rescue operations at Nariman House where they killed two terrorists and saved many hostages. Some of his other notable achievements include leading various counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and North-East India and participating in disaster relief operations like Operation Sadbhavana in Gujarat and Operation Black Thunder in Punjab.
